How long does an adult hearing assessment take?
A comprehensive appointment is usually planned for about 60 minutes. It may include history and examination, pure-tone audiometry, immittance testing, discussion of the results and a written report. The exact duration depends on the clinical question.
How should an adult prepare for a hearing assessment?
Special preparation is usually not required. Bring previous audiograms, reports and medical records if you have them. If you use hearing aids, bring the devices, charger or spare batteries.
Is audiometry painful?
Pure-tone audiometry is non-invasive and is not normally painful. You listen for tones through headphones and indicate when you hear them. During immittance testing you may briefly notice a change of pressure in the ear canal.
How should I prepare my child for a hearing assessment?
For a young child, choose a time when they are usually calm or asleep, especially if objective tests are planned. An older child can be told in advance that they will be listening for sounds.
My baby did not pass newborn hearing screening. Does that mean hearing loss?
No. A refer result on screening is not a diagnosis. The condition of the outer or middle ear and the test environment can affect the result. Repeat screening or diagnostic assessment may be recommended.
Could delayed speech be related to hearing?
Hearing loss can affect speech and language development, so hearing assessment is often an important part of evaluating a child with delayed speech. There are many possible causes, and other specialists may be involved when appropriate.
Which hearing aid is best?
There is no single best hearing aid for everyone. The choice depends on the audiogram, degree of hearing loss, ear anatomy, lifestyle, required features and budget. The selected model also needs to support the required fitting range.
What causes ringing or noise in the ears?
Tinnitus is the perception of sound without a corresponding external source. It may be associated with hearing loss, noise exposure, ear conditions, some medicines and other factors. Persistent or troublesome tinnitus may require ENT and audiological assessment.
When should I see an ENT doctor and when an audiologist?
Ear pain, discharge, marked blockage, inflammatory symptoms or nose and throat complaints usually call for an ENT assessment. If the main concern is hearing loss, speech understanding, tinnitus or hearing aids, an audiological assessment is appropriate.
Can I rely on an online hearing test?
An online test is a preliminary screening tool, not a medical diagnosis. Results depend on the device, headphones, volume settings and background noise. If you have symptoms or the result raises concerns, a clinical hearing assessment provides more reliable information.
How do I book an appointment?

When will I receive my results?
Most results are discussed during the appointment, and the written report is normally prepared after the required tests are completed. If additional assessment is needed, the doctor will explain the next step.
